OCONEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

At a board meeting on Monday, Oconee County officials confirmed additional resource officers will be stationed at elementary schools in the district.

Officials said is already one elementary school resource officers for the district, but the school board recently approved hiring two more for elementary schools in the district starting as soon as December or the first of January.

When all three SRO positions are staffed, one will serve in each of the following attendance areas: Walhalla, Seneca and Westminster.

The addition of the resource officers will come as a relief to residents in the area who said they were on edge following the Townville Elementary school shooting.

Taxpayers can be relieved, too. The school board said the initiative will not have any effect on them as the board had the financial resources to make the additions happen.

According to the school board, resource officers serve multiple roles including:

  • Education
  • Safety assessments
  • Mentoring students
  • Home visits for welfare checks
