GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville Police Department is holding a “Fill the K-9 Trailer” donation drive to collect items for people devastated by flooding from Hurricane Matthew in Nichols, SC.

The donation drive is Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

“Nichols is located in Marion County, between the Little Pee Dee and Lumber Rivers, and was completely under water after the hurricane,” Greenville police spokesman Gilberto Franco stated in a news release. “More than 270 homes were destroyed and less than 10 percent of the homeowners had flood insurance. Of the approximately 350 people who live in Nichols, 75 percent are senior citizens, and most of the residents did not have much to begin with.”

Franco said many people are familiar with coastal towns like Charleston, Hilton Head and Beaufort, but many may not have heard of Nichols.

“Nichols and small rural towns like it do not have the resources and have not received the attention and emergency aid that the more well-known locations have,” Franco said.
