First baby ever born at Mary Black Hospital has died

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The woman who was the first baby to be born at Mary Black Memorial Hospital, whose parents chose the hospital as her namesake, has died, according to the J.F. Floyd Obituary.

Mary Black Tolleson Grant died Monday at age 91, according to her obituary.

On Jan. 31, 1925, she became the first baby born at Mary Black hospital, the obituary states. 

According to Tammy Whaley, a spokesperson for the University of South Carolina Upstate, the hospital's founders, Drs. Sam Orr Black and Hugh S. Black named it in honor of their wife and mother, Mary Louisa Snoddy Black. 

Whaley said Grant's parents named her Mary Black in honor of being the first baby born at the hospital.

Visitation for  will be on Thursday from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. at Covenant Baptist Church.

Funeral services will follow 2 p.m. at the church.

Burial will be in Pacolet Memorial Gardens, located at 141 Memorial Drive in Pacolet.
