LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

School officials are investigating how two students managed to walk off from EB Morse Elementary on Monday.

Laurens police said they were called to the school after the two juvenile females had not returned to their classrooms after telling their teacher they were going to another location in the building.

According to the police report, the girls exited the school through a side door and walked off school grounds.

Police said the girls were found in the area of Laurens City Park. Officers picked them up, returned them to school, where school officials notified parents.

Superintendent Dr. Stevens Peters said the children slipped away while students were changing classes, first going to the bathroom, then out to the playground. Peters said a teacher noticed the students were missing as soon as class began.

The children were thought to be off campus for about 30 minutes.

The incident is under investigation.
