COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Midlands residents will work with the University of South Carolina to aid areas of the state affected by Hurricane Matthew.

On Thursday and Friday, USC will collect bottled water, cleaning supplies, non-perishable food items and diapers.

Donators can drop off items at two locations:

  • 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the USC Alumni Center, located at 900 Senate St. in Columbia
  • 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Bi-Lo, located at 4464 Devine St. in Columbia, where a Gamecock Football equipment truck will be stationed

On Monday, USC will send a truck of the donations to Marion County, where many Nichols and Mullins residents have been displaced and affected by post-hurricane flooding and widespread damage.

Volunteers with a student-led service initiative called UofSC Relief will help load the truck with donations before it leaves at 11 a.m. Monday. The relief efforts are a collaboration between USC's My Carolina Alumni Association, Athletics Department and UofSC Relief as well as the South Carolina Police Chief's Association and Shealy Truck Center.

My Carolina Alumni Association executive director Jack Claypoole says the university's relief efforts demonstrate the passion of alumni and students in giving back to the state.

“As Gamecocks we are driven by a sense of responsibility, instilled in us as students, that we live as alumni," says Claypoole. "There are so many of our fellow alumni and friends impacted by this storm that it is only natural for us to use our greatest strength – our alumni – to rally in support of South Carolina.”
