SIMPSONVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said a former fire chief is facing embezzlement charges.

Deputies said between March and September, Joel Lynn misappropriated funds at Clear Springs Fire and Rescue. He also reportedly manipulated payroll records in order to receive more money from the agency.

Lynn, 47, turned himself in and is currently being held at the Greenville County Detention Center. He is charged with embezzlement less than $10,000 and two counts of financial transaction card fraud greater than $500.

He is the second chief in 2016 to be caught embezzling from the department, according to deputies.

In April, warrants were issued for former Clear Springs fire chief 43-year-old Gregory Keith Merritt. Merritt reportedly spent more than $20,000 for non-departmental use.
