WOODRUFF, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Two Upstate families are fighting for answers amid the investigation into a horrific kidnapping in Spartanburg County.

Anderson couple Kala Brown, 30, and Charlie Carver, 32, went missing in late August. The pair's mysterious disappearance prompted concern from relatives who said it was out of character.

After missing persons reports were filed, the Anderson Police Department launched an investigation into Brown and Carver's whereabouts.

On Thursday, half the mystery was solved.

Brown was reportedly found chained up by her neck and ankle in a storage container on the property of a sex offender in the Woodruff area. She was held there for two months, during which time she told investigators she said she saw kidnapping suspect Todd Kohlhepp shoot Carver, investigators said.

Carver has still not been found, but his family is hoping for his safe return. Below is a statement from the Carver family:

"We, Charlie David Carver's family, would like to begin by saying how wonderful it is Kala has been found and that she is receiving care and is back with family and friends. The outpouring of concern and affection from the community has been overwhelming and we are very thankful.  At this time we know that no more than what has been reported within the media or statements made by law enforcement. We ask that you continue to pray for Kala's healing and for David's safe return as well. In the meantime, we ask for some time to ourselves as we process events as they unfold. Thank you for your understanding and expect updates as they become available."

Relatives of Carver met with the Spartanburg County coroner on Friday after human remains were uncovered in a shallow grave on Kohlhepp's property. The victim has not yet been identified though, and the family said it is unknown if the body belongs to a man or woman at this time.

They are unsettled by the discovery and Brown's statement, but said they're clinging to hope Carver is still alive.

Brown's best friend and family spokesperson Cassandra Ellen said she is very shaken up but is a survivor. Ellen said Brown met Kohlhepp through a friend and cleaned houses for him as a side job. He reportedly paid her $500 per home.

Ellen said Brown saw her boyfriend shot three times by her accused kidnapper. She said her path to rebuilding after the traumatic experience will take time, but it will happen.

"She had to fight every day," Ellen said. "She's the strongest person I know."
