Child injured by fireworks in Waynesville, nearby house engulfed in flames

WAYNESVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The NC SBI EOD team believes that an explosive device that injured a child on Monday was commercial fireworks.

Several emergency service crews were dispatched to a residence in on Zurich Lane after calls of an explosive device detonating in close proximity to a child at about 4:30 p.m.

The child was transported to an area hospital with injuries.

The area was then secured by emergency crews and the NC SBI EOD team who further investigated the incident. It is believed the explosive device was commercial fireworks

As deputies secured the scene, a house located nearby became engulfed in flames and more fire departments were called to the scene to assist. It is unknown at this time if the two incidents are related.

No other injuries were reported. An investigation is ongoing.
