DILLON, SC (AP) -

A woman trying to become both South Carolina's first female and openly gay sheriff has lost in Dillon County.

Election returns from the State Election Commission show incumbent Democratic Dillon County Sheriff Major Hulon received 66 percent of the vote Tuesday, while Crystal Moore received 33 percent.

Moore ran as a petition candidate after the party primaries in June.

Moore worked for nearly two decades in Latta, rising to police chief before she was fired for her sexual orientation. The town hired her back, then fired her two years later for not doing her job right.

Moore's lawyer says she was actually fired in retaliation for getting an outside agency to investigate a sexual harassment complaint. Moore is considering suing Latta.
