GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The man who struck and killed a firefighter while leading Greenville County deputies on a chase in a stolen car was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty on Wednesday, the solicitor’s office said.

27-year-old John William Kennedy pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder, failure to stop for blue lights resulting in death, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, reckless homicide, and grand larceny.

The fatal crash happened on September 17, 2015.

Kennedy stole a truck from his former girlfriend’s father and attempted to sell it to another man.

Deputies received a tip that the stolen vehicle was at the TD’s Express Mart on SC 253 and arrived to find the two men transferring items from the stolen truck to the other truck. When he saw deputies, Kennedy jumped into the other man’s truck and sped off, hitting and injuring a deputy in the process.

The wounded deputy opened fire at the truck as it was speeding toward him and struck Kennedy in the forehead, but still Kennedy was able to get away. A chase ensued and continued down US 25 until Kennedy began driving in the wrong direction. Kennedy eventually crashed head-on into a motorcycle, killing the rider, Jordan Howard. Howard was heading to work at the North Greenville Fire Department when the crash occurred.

Kennedy must serve at least 16 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
