Sunshine, wildfire concern for Veterans Day

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Veterans Day leads with sunny skies for events across the area, but strong wind will pick up late in the day.

As wildfires continue to burn in several NC counties, and one in Pickens County, the low humidity and strong wind will be no help to crews battling the flames.

Burning has now been banned in all of the Upstate and western North Carolina because of dry vegetation, low humidity, and increasing winds. There is an Air Quality Alert for the mountains because of wildfire smoke, but no alerts as of yet for the Upstate. We can still smell and see some smoke in the Upstate however.

High temperatures will be pretty mild for November. It will warm to 73 in the Upstate and 66 in the mountains under sunny skies this afternoon.

Winds will remain gusty overnight Friday night into Saturday. It will be sustained at 10-20 mph with gusts higher than that. Colder air will push in, and that will mean highs in the 50s area-wide for Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night will bring the first frost for the Upstate and a hard freeze for parts of the mountains. Temps will slowly warm up into next week, but no rain is in sight at this point.
