ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Anderson County Humane Society is collecting donations to help a dog that is getting a second chance at life.

Officials said the canine, Gabe, was found nearly starved to death in a black trash bag.

"Our hearts are broken," Humane Society officials said in a Facebook post. "Gabe was found abandoned, tied in a trash bag like garbage."

He only weighs 12 pounds and was described as "barely alive." The 501c3 rescue said Gabe is safe now, but help is needed to cover the cost of his care. He was checked into an animal hospital by his new foster parent on Thursday.

Donations are being collected online for his treatment. Click here to support Gabe's recovery.

Tracey Hauser with the Humane Society said Friday that Gabe was making an amazing recovery and may be able to leave the veterinarian's office tomorrow.

According to Hauser, Gabe received a blood transfusion and is now on IV fluids and antibiotics. Gabe is now in better spirits, according to Hauser, and is eating on his own.
