PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials with the South Carolina Forestry Commission on Sunday lifted the voluntary evacuation orders for people living near the Pinnacle Mountain Fire in Pickens County. Officials also said the fire had grown more than 500 acres on Saturday and was burning about 2,100 acres Sunday morning.

Below is a statement from Douglas Wood, a spokesman for the SCFC, about the growing fire and the efforts to contain it:

"Infrared imagery provided by Saturday night flights indicated the fire has grown to approximately 2,100 acres, an increase of 500 acres from yesterday, but a much slower progression than from the two previous days. Light, steady rain in Pickens has been falling for more than an hour at the time of this writing, but is not sufficient to extinguish the fire. While the early rain is likely to hamper firefighting crews’ backburning efforts this morning, they continue to construct and improve firelines on both flanks.

Firefighting crews are working to expand the fireline perimeter significantly to a proposed area of approximately 5,900 acres. Four bulldozers are being added to the resources constructing the firelines today, bringing the total to 10. Incident command staff extended the lines farther east and west Saturday out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of protecting communities along the Highway 11 corridor and Table Rock State Park."

Crews encouraged voluntary evacuations for residents in several areas around the Pinnacle Mountain fire on Saturday but made the decision to cancel those evacuation orders Sunday morning.

“The firelines we’ve constructed so far are holding very well, particularly those on the lower portions of the left and right flanks of the fire,” said SCFC Incident Commander Mike Bozzo. “These are the areas we were unsure about yesterday, which is what prompted the voluntary evacuation.”

The evacuation zones were for the following areas:

  • All residents north of Highway 11 between Sleepy Springs Drive on the east and Falcon Crest Way on the west
  • All residents of Sugar Likker Road

Streets included in the evacuation zone included the following:

  • Sleepy Springs Drive
  • Laurel Ford Lane
  • Centurion Lane
  • Lake Barbara Road
  • Woodmere Drive
  • Falcon Crest Way
  • Sugar Likker Road.
