An air quality alert has been put into affect for several North Carolina counties due to possible dense smoke from wildfires.

A Code Orange Air Quality alert has been issued until midnight on Sunday for Burke, Rutherford, Buncombe and Henderson County. Code Orange indicates that air quality is unhealthy for people with respiratory diseases and heart disease.

According to the Henderson County Department of Health, sensitive populations include:

  • Individuals with asthma or other respiratory disease
  • Individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Individuals with airway hyper responsiveness
  • Individuals with cardiovascular disease
  • Elderly individuals
  • Young children
  • Pregnant women
  • Smokers

A number of steps can be taken when smoke is present to the degree that it limits visibility. Those steps include:

  • Pay attention to local weather and news reports for changing conditions
  • Stay inside as much as possible with windows and doors shut
  • Limit physical exertion outdoors
  • Asthmatics should follow their asthma management plan
  • Keep airways moist by drinking lots of water

Smoke is expected to be excessive Saturday and Sunday as wildfires continue burning. The smoke will create unhealthy breathing conditions where the smoke is most concentrated.
