MCDOWELL, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Investigations continue to examine what caused the blaze that leveled a building at Camp Grimes Sunday night, according to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Assistant Scout Executive Dave Ritchie, a caretaker's wife stated she smelled something different than the wildfires that had been burning and, after driving a mile to the back of the camp, saw the dining hall engulfed in flames. She called 911.

The Sheriff’s Office said that emergency crews received a call at 6:18 p.m. on Nov. 13 that the dining hall at Camp Grimes was on fire.

Deputies stated flames destroyed the 7,000-square-foot building owned by the Mecklenburg Chapter of the Boy Scouts of America.

Ritchie said that the camp is connected to another complex and the firefighters were able to save the other part of the complex, but the dining hall and kitchen were lost.

Ritchie affirmed that the board met Monday and they are already in the process to get everything rebuilt. He also said that they will secure the burned area and continue to operate.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that fire investigator, Craig Walker, from the McDowell County Emergency Management stated that the cause of fire is under investigation but it is likely to take several days.
