LAKE LURE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Smoke continues to blanket Rumbling Bald Mountain in Lake Lure.

"The fire started a couple of days after we arrived," resident Patty Gergen said. "It's awful."

She can't see flames from the Party Rock Fire, but she can smell it at her home which sits just off Lake Lure. Some of the smoke cleared just enough for her to do some work on her cottage.

Flames are so intense it's affected more than a thousand people who live in the area.

"A lot of our friends- people we know have been evacuated and are still out of town," Gergen said. "It came dangerously close to quite a few homes."

NC troopers closed a part of Hwy 9 which leads to the mountain, with the exception to those who live on Boys Camp Road.

Gergen said the impact of the fires will have a lasting impact.

"Just the beauty of the whole area is going to be impacted for many many years and the economy as well," Gergen said.

More than 800 people are working the fire, 500 of them are on the front lines. As of Tuesday evening the fire had reached 19 percent containment.

"Those are the firefighters with their engines, four-man crew that have been protecting all the structures," Victoria Tillotson said.

She's the public information officer with the North Carolina Forest Service.

"We're still having some difficulty with aviation resources when it's too smoky, they can't fly and so that has hindered us in some ways using aircraft," Tillotson said.

She says firefighters continue to set fire lines despite the rugged terrain. However, she says they had to give up on some land.

"It's just burning like we've never seen it before," she said.
