A Spartanburg County elementary school was placed on lockdown Thursday morning while deputies searched for suspects involved in a car chase, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said a car chase ended near Arcadia Elementary School and the people inside the car ran off on foot.

Lt. Kevin Bobo said a deputy spotted a wanted suspect in a car along with five other people in the parking lot of the Big Bear convenience store in Una Thursday morning.

"When the suspect vehicle spotted our officer, they took off, resulting in a brief pursuit that ended near Arcadia Elementary School when the suspect vehicle wrecked and overturned," Bobo stated.

According to the incident report, five individuals fled from the scene. Two of the suspects, identified as George Humphrey and Kenshawn Shippy, were apprehended in the woods.

Humphrey and Shippy were taken into custody and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

A third suspect was transported from the scene for medical evaluation but later released after deputies said they learned he had only been picked up by the suspects accused of driving the stolen car.

"We asked Spartanburg School District 6 to put Arcadia Elementary School on lockdown out of an abundance of caution," Bobo stated. "That lockdown lasted approximately one hour, but is now over."

School district officials confirmed the lockdown had been lifted as of 11 a.m.
