PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The School District of Pickens County announced absences are excused Friday due to heavy smoke in the area.

A district spokesperson said schools will open two hours late but attendance will be optional. The county is under an air quality alert due to thousands of acres of forestry burning near Pinnacle Mountain.

Morning 4K classes are cancelled.

Spokesman John Eby said a messaged to parents was activated at 4 p.m.

"We expect the current large-scale burnout operation on the Pinnacle Mountain Fire to create heavy smoke, which will combine with existing air pollutants to create dangerous air quality conditions in parts of the county, especially in the morning," he said. "Parents have the discretion to keep their children home from school all day, and all absences will be excused for the day."
