GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials said things took a frightening turn when a Greenville County inmate took a detention officer's weapon and held another hospital patient hostage during a hospital visit.

According to Greenville County Governmental Affairs Coordinator Bob Mihalic, the incident occurred Friday, November 11.

Reports said that 40-year-old Greenville County Detention Center inmate Jimmy Antrone Dewitt was signed out of the detention center and at the Greenville Health System Emergency Room (GHSER) for medical complications when he was able to obtain the transporting Detention Officer's service weapon.

Mihalic said Dewitt pointed the weapon at the Detention Officer responsible for his security, as well as a civilian patient at the hospital, while demanding his restraints be removed.

According to reports, Greenville Health System Police responded to the scene and officers were able to convince Dewitt to surrender the service weapon.

No one was injured during the incident and according to Mihalic, Dewitt was subsequently released from GHSER and returned to Greenville County Detention Center where he remains on Administrative Separation.

Mihalic said Dewitt was charged with first degree assault and battery, taking of a hostage, unlawful possession of a weapon/firearm and escape.
