GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Veterans took to the streets on Saturday to bring awareness to the amount of veterans who commit suicide every day in the United States.

Irreverent Warriors is an organization that unites veterans across the U.S. with an event called the Silkies Hike. During the hike, participants carry 22 pounds while hiking 22 kilometers to symbolize the statistic that we lose an average of 22 U.S. veterans to suicide every day, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Irreverent Warriors mission is to prevent veteran suicide by getting veterans together to bring awareness to the topic and add humor to the mix. In order to do this, participants hike wearing only their combat boots and ‘silkies’ which are small, green physical training shorts, hence the name ‘Silkies Hike’.

The event was completely free for all veterans. It took place in downtown Greenville.

The organization raised more than 6-thousand dollars to make it happen.
