HONEA PATH, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A well-known Upstate sports figure passed away on Sunday after a long run as the manager of the Belton-Honea Path high school football team.

Marlee Gambrell was known to many on the Belton-Honea Path high school campus. Gambrell was the trainer and equipment manager of the school's football team for the entirety of the team's existence – 51 years, according to the Superintendent Dr. Richard Rosenberger.

He attended most of all the football games at BHP since 1966, missing maybe three games due to major health issues, the BHP website said. The website goes on to say that Gambrell was well loved by the community, current BHP players as well as past players.

Gambrell passed away Sunday morning. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Belton-Honea Path auditorium at 3 p.m.
