GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Jack Allison, a retired 89-year-old judge, was beaten and robbed by a suspect who knew him by name, and now he's taking extra precaution to avoid a similar situation.

When 89-year-old Jack Allison isn't reading, he's singing. He says he's not the best singer, but the retired magistrate gets requests to sing throughout the Cherokee County.

"Happy birthday to you," he sang. "Happy birthday dear friend."

However, Allison warns those he serenades and tells them to put their hands over their ears as he sings. In fact, he's taken pictures in a book entitled 'Victims of the Singing Judge'. But, now Allison himself is a victim of a serious crime.

"I got out of my car in my driveway and closed the door and turned around to be sure that I had closed the door," Allison said. "A voice came from behind me and said Mr. Jack. That person hit me right there. I don't know if he hit me with just his fist. I don't know if he- I don't know what he had. I just know he knocked me down."

Allison said after he was hit the man then reached into his back pocket and took his billfold.

He spent two days in a hospital, has a black eye, bruises and emotional scars.

"He bloodied my nose and skinned up my feet," Allison said.

Investigators with the Gaffney Police Department are searching for the robber.

"You always think something like this is going to happen to somebody else, you know- it's not going to ever happen to me, but it did," he said.

Allison said he now reads as a .38 revolver sits next to him.
