BREVARD, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies confirm a man is dead after falling more than 50 feet from the top of Moore Cove Falls in Transylvania County on Tuesday.

Detectives confirm the 23-year-old man fell about 10 feet then an additional 50 to 75 feet from the waterfall in what appears to be an accident.

The victim was identified as Wallace Rice Parish of Melbourne, FL.

Parish was visiting Moore Cove Falls, which is located in the Pisgah National Forest in Brevard, with a group of friends.

Deputies said the tragedy serves as a reminder to have a healthy respect for the beautiful landmarks, as Transylvania County sees on average of six waterfall deaths per year, according to Chief Deputy Eddie Gunter with the sheriff's office.

"Our waterfalls here in Western North Carolina are very dangerous," Gunter said. "Even though water levels are down, those wet rocks at the top are still slick and can be deadly.”

This case is under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Forest Service.
