Troopers said a 17-year-old boy was killed in a crash and a 16-year-old driver was hurt when a car overturned on Six Mile Highway just after midnight Wednesday morning.
The crash happened near Madden Bridge Road, about a mile and a half north of Central.
Troopers said the 16-year-old was driving north in a 2001 Volkswagen when the car ran off the road, struck a culvert and flipped over.
The 17-year-old passenger was ejected from the car and died at the scene.
The coroner identified the boy as Dillon McCade Ridgeway of Love & Care Road in Six Mile.
Dillon was a junior at Daniel High School.
The Pickens County School District released this statement on his passing Wednesday.
"We are extremely saddened to learn of the death of Dillon Ridgeway, an 11th grade student at Daniel High School. Dillon was enrolled in the Public Safety program at the Pickens County Career and Technology Center and had career goals of becoming a firefighter. He had a great sense of humor and was always able to put a smile on someone’s face. He will definitely be missed by his classmates, teachers, and staff. Our deepest sympathies are with the Ridgeway family and with everyone in our community who was close to Dillon.
Grief counselors will be available at the school on Monday morning and space will be provided for students needing time to grieve."
The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.
The SC Highway Patrol MAIT team is investigating the crash.
