COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Tuesday issued a state of emergency for Pickens and Greenville counties, where crews are battling the Pinnacle Mountain wildfire.

In the proclamation, Haley said unfavorable weather conditions caused the fire to grow, destroying property and natural resources.

Haley said the wildfire will need assistance beyond the scope of local and state agencies and she wants to give the agencies involved in the wildfire nettle “all the support necessary to ultimately extinguish the wildfire.”

The order calls for the SC Emergency Operations Plan be put in effect and is units of the SC National Guard and State Guard to be placed on state active duty.

The state of emergency will be in effect through Dec. 7.

Firefighters said the Pinnacle Mountain wildfire had grown to more than 7,282 acres by Wednesday and was moving closer to the North Carolina state line. The fire was 40 percent contained as of 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Officials said preparations were underway for a new burnout operation along the northern perimeter of the fire but no evacuations were necessary as of Wednesday.

Crews battling the wildfire said the decision was made Wednesday to close additional trails due to the growing fire.

Trail closures from Ceasar’s Head to Sassafras were ordered Wednesday.

The Foothills Trail, Dismal Trail, and Gum Gap Trail are closed.

Table Rock State Park and its trail system will also remain closed but the visitor center off Highway 11 will remain open.
