Hundreds flock to downtown Greenville to enjoy Thanksgiving outside their home

Posted: Updated:

Thanksgiving has become a holiday that is open to interpretation. Most think of a homemade meal with family all under one roof. But this special time can be celebrated in several different ways.
"Our world changes and people are fast paced and short on time. People have said they enjoy it and don't have to do all the prep, clean their house and prepare. And the worst part is for most people cleaning up," Carl Sobocinski, Table 301 President said.

For those that want to avoid the many tasks Thanksgiving feasts bring, hundreds instead decided to head to restaurants like Soby's in downtown Greenville Thursday night.

"We started today with a little over 800 but because of the beautiful weather, we've taken some walk ins so we'll feed about 900 people today before the day is over," Sobocinski said.

It's taken the staff of over 50 to prepare since Monday for the high number of guests. Many say those they work side by side with have become like family.  "It's like a tradition for me, it's always a bigger crowd every year. I enjoy the crowd that comes in, i love getting to serve other families. And i get to spend some time with my family afterwards," Ashley Wright, Soby's bartender said.

"We talk to them at the beginning of the shift and the last couple of days about how the management is thankful to the staff who will come in and do this but also to remind them, they're a big part of others people's day and there's a lot to be thankful for," Sobocinski said.

The Table 301 president said it's become a dining tradition for some. "A group I was speaking to she has a group of 22 and this is their fourth year and she said the first year she felt  a little awkward, and now, it feels great and it's easy and we can enjoy our time together."

Everyone within Soby's restaurant on Thanksgiving, whether working or enjoying a feast said they have something to be grateful for. "Thanksgiving means a lot to me, I have a lot to be grateful for," Wright said.

"People just gave us a lot of gratitude because it made their lives easier," Sobocinski said.
