Pickens firefighters celebrate Thanksgiving

PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It’s been a grueling two weeks for the men and women fighting the fire on Pinnacle Mountain. Russell Hubright with the South Carolina Forestry Commission says there was no change Thursday.

The fire was still 40% contained and had burned 7,300 acres.

"You know it's tough on the guys and ladies to be away from their families during the holidays like this,” explained Hubright.

Luckily they get a much needed break with all the fixings.

"These guys are going to get a little bit of everything. We've got cranberry sauce, rolls,” explained volunteer Michelle Bryant, “We were cutting up desserts a few minutes ago. People from the community have been bringing them."

Dozens of volunteers, like Michelle Bryant have been slaving away in the kitchen while the fire crews all day while crews were fighting the flames on the mountain.

"Were just trying to give them a little bit that "home" feeling,” explained Bryant, “So that they feel like they're part of a thanksgiving somewhere."

Tomorrow it’s another 12 hour day for many of them, but for now, they’re thankful for this small moment of normalcy.

"You're out there doing that all day long then you come back in and go oh yeah it's thanksgiving,” explained Hubright, “Even though you're not with your family , at least there's some special kind of a treat to it."
