LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Laurens County School District 55 is grieving the loss of a high school student.

Officials said the Laurens District High School student died Sunday night.

Coroner Nick Nichols said the 16-year-old girl died at home.

An autopsy will be performed Monday.

The school district released this statement Monday morning:

Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) officials were made aware of the tragic loss of a student at Laurens District High School (LDHS) last night. Limited details of the death will be made public as the District wishes to respect the privacy of the family. The death of a student, however, has a ripple effect on the school community; therefore, LCSD 55 and LDHS are providing counseling services to any student at the high school who may be adversely affected by this loss. LCSD 55 Superintendent, Dr. Stephen Peters, said “We are grieving for the loss of a young life and its infinite possibilities; and, we pray for the family, friends, and students most affected by this event.”

LDHS and LCSD 55 serve the communities of Laurens, Waterloo, Gray Court, Hickory Tavern and their surrounding residents in the western half of Laurens County, SC.
