PENDLETON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A former Oconee County deputy is behind bars after he allegedly used a knife to cut his girlfriend while fighting over a cell phone, reports state.

Anthony Bernard Wheeler, 44 of Seneca, was charged with first degree domestic violence for an incident that occurred on Nov 24 at a residence in Pendleton, warrants state.

According to the Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw, Wheeler was terminated immediately after he was notified of the incident which was around 1 a.m. on Nov 25.

Sheriff Crenshaw said he was very disappointed to receive the news.

“I was very disappointed in the decisions he made given the stance that I have taken against domestic violence,” Sheriff Crenshaw said. “I realize our sworn deputies are human and mistakes will be made. However, I have made it very clear in my mission statement for the Sheriff’s Office that we will maintain high standards of accountability. I will continue to hold our staff to a higher standard.”

Deputies said they responded to the residence in reference to a domestic dispute and that when they arrived on scene a female victim stated that she had been cut by her boyfriend. She said they had been arguing over her cell phone.

According to the report, Wheeler had requested the victim hand him her cell phone back and she told him she did not have it. He then began acting erratically and cornered the victim into their bedroom and continued to argue, per the report. She said Wheeler then made a statement that caused her to fear for her life and she retreated to the bathroom of the home.

Wheeler then unsnapped a knife and came at the victim and pressed the knife on her chest, the report said. She said she grabbed the knife to protect herself, but that when she did Wheeler pulled the knife away and cut her in two locations.

The victim had been cut on her hand and the side of her wrist, the report said. She was evaluated and treated by EMS on scene.

Wheeler was arrested and taken into custody at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. He was placed on a $5,000 surety bond.

Sheriff Crenshaw said none of the staff members were aware of any issues going on in Wheeler’s personal life.

Wheeler was employed with the Sheriff’s Office from Feb 2013 until Nov 2016. He started as a deputy and later worked in the narcotics unit. Just last week he was assigned to the school resource unit.
