GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville City Council approved a big donation Monday that will help Greenville firefighters install working fire alarms to homes across the city.

The Greenville City Fire Department received a $6,000 donation from the Corley Plumbing Air Electric Company. The money will be used for the department’s Smoke Alarm and Fire Education Program.

The goal of the program is to install working smoke alarms in every part of the city. So far, nearly 2,000 smoke alarms have been installed.

Since the donation was over $1,000, it had to be approved by the council. It was approved unanimously.

Community Risk Reduction Coordinator Will Broscious said the fire department is happy to partner with Upstate businesses.

"Any time we can partner with a local business to really push our mission and our efforts forward and to make our community safer it means a great deal to us,” Broscious said. “This was a really great opportunity to partner with a local business so we're very thrilled and we look forward to be able to do some really exciting things for our community members."
