SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

City Council approved a development agreement for a 10-million dollar renovation of a building in Downtown Spartanburg on Monday.

The agreement calls for a contractor to undertake renovations that would create 46 apartments and four new retail shops in the area. Rent for the apartments is projected to run from $1,100 to $1,800 a month.

The renovations will take place at what was once known as the Bishop Furniture Store. The building is located on Main Street.

The City of Spartanburg says officials will review the historical value of the building and then construction will get started.

"This project will go before a joint meeting of the design review board and the harb, which is the historic review board and they will meet on this building, look at the design and the plans and the historical value of that building and upon their approval the project will get started,” said Patty Bock, economic developer for City of Spartanburg

The development agreement was approved by a vote of five to- one.
