PICKENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Department of Health and Environment Control (DHEC) reported that a person has started post-exposure treatment after being potentially exposed to rabies by a stray cat that tested positive for the disease.

DHEC stated the victim was scratched while trying to provide care for the animal near the City of Pickens on Nov. 22. The cat was euthanized and confirmed to have rabies on Nov. 23.

DHEC recommends people to give wild and stray animals their space and to keep their pets’ up-to-date rabies vaccinations. Anyone who sees an animal in need must contact a local animal control office.

According to DHEC, the cat is the sixth animal in Pickens County to test positive for rabies in 2016.
