PIGEON FORGE, TN (FOX Carolina) -

Travis Cogdill still gets choked up when he thinks about the devastation that surrounds him.

"Mom and dad are doing good. We got them out," Cogdill said.

For 43 years, his parents built a home for him in Sevier County, TN, but now it's gone.

"The fire had come from this direction and jumped the road- and the embers and stuff were crossing the road like crazy," Cogdill said."It got the house up on the hill - right there. It came and went around this house which it didn't touch and it got my grandpa's house and then it came down here and got this one."

His father, a Vietnam veteran, fought in war, but couldn't battle flames from a raging wildfire.

"The filing cabinet was with military documents with all these metals except for his purple heart which was in the china cabinet that we still haven't found," he said.

As Cogdill looked for what he could salvage, he pointed to remnants of his mother's china, a scorched washer and dryer, and burned pole that belonged to the family's Christmas tree.

"This is just a house. There's people who have lost their lives. Mom and dad are fortunate," Cogdill said.

He found his father's watch and pointed to what he says truly matters - a statue of Jesus that still stands.

"God has always been the center of our family and that just kind of - I don't know, made us feel good," Cogdill said.
