SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

It was supposed to be a day of new beginnings for Spartanburg couple, Tom and Ashley Sheriff, but just as they were about to start a new chapter, tragedy struck.

"They were on the way to do their loan closing for their new home, for them and their four boys," said Scott Waddell.

Scott Waddell says it was a day his sister, Ashley, and brother-in-law, Tom,  had been looking forward to for months.

"They were buying their new house.  They had their whole lives in front of them,  but in one instant it changed,"  said Waddell.

As Tom and Ashley turned onto Pine Street, they laughed and talked about the exciting future ahead of them.

"Right before the accident, my sister said to Tom, we're going to sign our lives away with this new house. Are you ready? Are you scared?' He said, I'm 36 years old. Nothing scares me anymore!' Then he took a breath and my sister saw the car out of the corner of her eye. That's when the impact happened. That was their last conversation," said Waddell.

Investigators say Ashley and Tom got into a wreck with another car at the intersection of Pine Street and Pearl Street, and is currently under investigation by the Spartanburg Police Department and the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office.

Ashley's condition was critical, but stable, and Tom's condition was much worse.

Tom's family says he fought hard, but never regained consciousness.

"His body was tired. He had fought for a week, and his body was just saying goodbye. There was nothing else they could do, and on Wednesday night, Tom took his last breath," said Waddell.

Waddell says Tom was surrounded by family and friends and passed away peacefully.

"Tom's last conscious memory was a good memory. He was with Ashley and they were talking about their future. He was excited to buy that house for his family," said Waddell.

Tom leaves behind his wife and their four young boys.

Tom will be laid to rest on Sunday at Seawright Funeral Home in Inman. The service will begin at 2:30 in the afternoon.

Tom's brother-in-law, Todd Waddell, launched a gofundme campaign, in hopes of raising $50,000 for Ashley and her boys. Click here to make a donation.
