COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A man was arrested for damaging state property with a piece of wood on Sunday, per the SC Dept. of Public Safety.

Officials say 46-year-old Ernest Rodney Thompson was arrested and charged with damage to state property after he admitted to using a two-by-four piece of wood to break out windows at the Statehouse grounds in Columbia around 4 a.m.

Thompson admitted to breaking out the windows on the Eastside of the Statehouse grounds, which is the entrance to the lieutenant governor’s office, and breaking out the windows on vehicles on Main Street, officials say.

According to officials, two Bureau of Protective Services (BPS) officers were on routine patrol when they encountered Thompson coming down the South steps of the Statehouse. He was speaking loudly to them and began walking toward them with the piece of wood in his hand.

Officers said they gave him verbal commands to put the wood down and Thompson was compliant and placed in handcuffs.

BPS secured the area and contacted the Department of Administration, which will be responsible for repairs to the Statehouse property. The Eastside steps will be closed off to visitors throughout the day on Sunday.

Thompson was transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. A mugshot has not yet been posted.
