WASHINGTON (FOX Carolina) -

In a media conference call on Wednesday, Rep. Jeff Duncan said he continues to support measures to deregulate gun silencers.

Duncan introduced the Hearing Protection Act, which is a provision of the Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, which seeks to reduce the cost of gun silencers and remove them from the National Firearms Act.

The SHARE Act was scheduled to have a hearing at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, but it was canceled until further notice after a gunman opened fire at a congressional baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, injuring several victims including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

Duncan said the hearing was canceled since members of congress were targeted by "a left-wing radical is what it looks like."

The representative, who left the baseball game shortly before the shooting and may have spoken to the gunman, said he continues his support for the legislation. He said the firearm used in the attack was not suppressed.

Duncan said most suppressed weapons are still as loud as a jackhammer, but the reduction in 30 to 40 decibels protects hunters from hearing damage. He advocates for suppressors, as opposed to hunters wearing hearing protection, because he said hearing protection makes hunting difficult with animals like turkeys and ducks.

A background check would still be required to purchase a gun silencer under the SHARE Act.

"We need to get away from this Hollywood mentality-influenced opinion of suppressors, that they make the firearm completely silent," Duncan said. "They do not."
