GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Sirens screamed through the streets of Virginia as EMS crews and FBI agents made their way to a ballpark.

A shooter, wielding a rifle shot several people including a Congressman who gathered for a GOP baseball practice.

"It's now touching different segments of society," Gregory Tony said.

He's says training is crucial when it comes to saving lives.

"I know we're (law enforcement, EMS) not going to be there fast enough, so I want you as a civilian to have the skills and tools to survive on your own," Tony said.

So, he started the national company Blue Spear Solutions. He and his team train, educate, and prepare employees and every day people how to survive an active shooter situation.

"Spent eight years in special operations, spent another six or so years on the SWAT team," said Tony, a former law enforcement officer with federal training and is certified as a tactical medic.

"Typically a major arterial bleed, people have three minutes or less- three minutes or less to treat that injury to enhance chance of survival," Tony said.

During the shooting at the ballpark in Virginia, reports stated a Congressman stopped the bleeding of Representative Steve Scalise, who was shot in the hip, by using a belt. Witnesses say during the shooting others tried to find cover in an open space.

"We train them to put themselves in a position where they can barricade and fortify their position to a suspect who is actively involved in killing civilians by creating limited access or almost zero access," Tony said.

He says the best bleeding control techniques are applying pressure with a knee near the femoral artery in the pelvic region. If this is done, Tony says it frees your hands to use a Tourniquet, which is a bandage used to stop bleeding. Tourniquets that Blue Spear Solutions provide come in a bleeding control kit which also includes gauze for wounds. Tony believes those kits should be placed in public places, in the workplace, and at churches in case of emergencies.
