MILLS RIVER, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Authorities confirmed a missing child was found safe near the Transylvania-Henderson county line on Thursday evening.

The Transylvania County Sheriff's Office, the Mills River Fire Department, the North Transylvania Volunteer Fire Department and the Hendersonville Police Department assisted in the search near Turkey Pen Road.

Officials said the child is a 10-year-old boy with autism who is low-functioning. He was participating in a camp activity when officials said a storm moved through the area. The child was frightened by a nearby lightning strike and fled on foot.

The child is from the Midlands of South Carolina.

Approximately 100 people were involved in the search.

"We're trying to pump the area full of responders," said Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney.

Air support was called in and helicopters did a preliminary flyover of the area.

Rescue officials said children with autism can be drawn to water so authorities were searching bodies of water in the area. Etowah Horseshoe Fire and Rescue confirmed it was assisting with a four-man team was searching on foot as well as a kayak team by water.

Talisman Camps confirmed the boy was on a day trip with one of their programs. According to the program's website, they provide summer camp opportunities to people ages 6 to 22 with ADHD, autism and Aspergers. The camp is based in Zirconia.

Just after 10 p.m., Mahoney confirmed the boy was found safe approximately a mile away from where he was last seen. The sheriff said the boy found another group camping and they set off an emergency beacon to alert authorities.

He was in good condition, Mahoney said, just shaken up and would be reunited with his parents.
