GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said a couple was arrested after an infant was brought to the hospital with severe injuries.

Deputies said the 5-month-old child was admitted to Greenville Memorial Hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday with severe oral trauma.

After an investigation was launched, deputies said they learned 23-year-old Ricardo Perez Salas put his finger down the baby's throat for an extended period of time when the baby started crying, causing severe damage.

Salas and 20-year-old Celeste Paulina Marroquin are accused of attempting to cover it up by not seeking medical attention for several days, deputies said.

The baby underwent emergency surgery and is currently on a ventilator but is expected to recover.

Salas and Marroquin were arrested and booked into the Greenville County Detention Center. Marroquin is charged with two counts of unlawful child neglect and is being held on a $20,000 bond. Salas is charged with child abuse and unlawful neglect and is being held without bond.
