CHESNEE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Cherokee County assistant fire chief said a family is without a home after a blaze completely destroyed it Saturday night.

The fire chief said five fire departments responded to the blaze reported at a home on the 300 block of McDonald Farms Road in Chesnee around 10:30 p.m.

All three people inside the home were able to get out safely, officials said.

Per the chief, the homeowner said he was working on the fuel system of his car in the garage when the fire started in the garage and then traveled through the home.

The home owner said he tried to put the fire out but was slightly burned in the process. He did not seek medical attention.

Fire crews did not leave the scene until 3 a.m.

Two of the family's cats were killed in the fire.

The home was declared a total loss.

The family is now staying with other family members.
