SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Rising second through fourth grade students from Spartanburg District 7 schools are spending part of their summer vacation reading to dogs at the Spartanburg Humane Society, according to a news release from the humane society.

On Mondays during the summer reading program, at least two dogs from the humane society will serve as a listening audience for children as they read.

Officials say using dogs in the program is a great way to prevent the “summer slide” and build self-confidence for the young readers and give attention to the shelter animals.
