The Oconee County Sheriff's Office said a woman is facing multiple charges after a violent incident on Sunday.

Deputies were dispatched to a home on Mema Lane in regards to a disturbance.

Deputies said when they arrived on scene they found 40-year-old April Dawn Townsend on scene with smoke coming from inside the home.

According to arrest warrants, Townsend tried to kill a man at the home by covering his face and head with two plastic bags before trying to decapitate him with a machete. Investigators said the victim's ear was severed in two before Townsend threw an ax at him.

When the victim tried to drive away, deputies said Townsend tried to set his truck on fire by sticking paper in the fuel door and lighting it on fire.

She is also accused of tried to set his house on fire, according to arrest warrants.

Deputies said the victim told them Townsend said people were coming to crucify her during the incident. When they interviewed her, deputies said Townsend "appeared to be oblivious to what was going on."

She is charged with attempted murder, second-degree arson, attempted arson and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

At a bond hearing on Monday afternoon, a judge denied bond for Townsend. An initial court appearance was set for July 28.

Townsend was previously arrested in 2015 in West Union and charged with attempted murder after deputies said Townsend's mother was found unresponsive with plastic bags over her head.

Deputies said Townsend told them after the incident "I had to release the demons, I'm the higher power." According to the incident report, Townsend told deputies she tried to baptize her mother but it failed so she brought her back to the home to suffocate her, calling her "the devil."

The Solicitor's Office said Townsend pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and battery in the 2015 incident and was sentenced to three years in prison suspended to three years probation.

Terms of her probation included random drug and alcohol testing as well as following mental health recommendations.
