The Pickens County Sheriff's Office said their deputies arrested a deputy with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning after an incident involving the deputy's ex-wife over the weekend.

Pickens County deputies said the incident occurred Saturday night at a home on Mauldin Road in Easley.

The off-duty Greenville County deputy, 32-year-old Herman William McDonald, was with his girlfriend visiting his sister Saturday night. His ex-wife was also visiting the residence.

Pickens County deputies said a verbal dispute erupted between the girlfriend and the sister and then escalated. During the altercation, McDonald is accused of grabbing his ex-wife, forcing her to the ground and then choking her until her vision became impaired.

Someone called 911 and McDonald and the girlfriend took off before Pickens County deputies arrived.

Other witnesses at the scene confirmed the sequence of events and deputies said the victim has swelling and signs of injury to her neck when they arrived.

Deputies said the assault took place in front of McDonald and the victim's ten-year-old child.

Both parties were interviewed Sunday afternoon and deputies said a Pickens County magistrate filed an arrest warrant for domestic violence first degree.

Sergeant Ryan Flood said McDonald was placed on non-paid, administrative leave after the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office of the investigation.

Pickens County deputies arrested McDonald at his home just after 8 a.m. Tuesday.

At a bond hearing on Tuesday, a judge set McDonald's bond at $10,000 and he was ordered not to have contact with the victim.
