Police, SBI investigating after Rutherfordton man shot to death in yard

RUTHERFORDTON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The Rutherfordton Police Department is investigating after a man was found dead in his yard on Saturday.

Investigators said 70-year-old Robert Marvin Rape was found with a shotgun wound to the chest outside his home on Briarwood Circle around 7:22 a.m.

Rutherfordton Police Chief Kevin Lovelace said the investigation is very active and police are awaiting autopsy results while conducting interviews and preparing evidence.

On Monday, Lovelace said the department requested the assistance of special agents with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney's Office.

A spokesperson for SBI confirmed agents are providing limited assistance in the investigation but is not the lead agency.
