GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A woman on Tuesday was sentenced for abandoning her newborn baby in a trash can in the Nicholtown area in 2014.

Sharon Ferguson pleaded guilty to assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

Ferguson left her newborn baby boy in a trash can outside a Greenville County home in August 2014.

The baby was found crying in the trash can inside a plastic bag after police followed a trail of blood from the house to the receptacle. Bloody towels were also inside the trash can.

Police found Ferguson in front of a liquor store on Laurens Road and took her into custody.

The judge sentenced Ferguson to ten years in prison suspended to 44 months.

Ferguson must serve 38 months of her sentence before qualifying for probation, but will receive credit for the three years she has already served.

Once Ferguson is released, she will be subject to three years of probation with mental health counseling.

Ferguson’s lawyer argued she did not know she was pregnant and delivered the baby herself on the floor of her home.
