GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A new grocery store is one step closer to getting the okay to build in the Upstate, though some neighbors aren't happy about the latest development.

The grocery chain Sprouts may soon open up on the coroner of Woodruff Road and Highway 14.

Greenville County Council approved the second reading 10 to 2 on Tuesday which would rezone the area and allow the grocery to begin building plans.

Some support the economic development, but some neighbors think the new store will bring bigger headaches to traffic in the already congested area.

The rezoning still must go through one more reading to be approved. That final reading is scheduled for July 18.

Several other measures were approved at Tuesday’s meeting, these include:

  • Allocating $11,274 to parks, recreation and tourism at the Swamp Rabbit Trail
  • Allocating $3,200 to the Greer Police Department for body cameras
  • Allocating $11,456 to parks, recreation and tourism at the Phillis Wheatley Community Center for building improvements and summer programs

Council also approved a first reading of an ordinance that would authorize the sale of the Old Berea Elementary School located at the coroner of Farris Bridge Road and Sulphur Springs Road. It will now head to a second reading.
