ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

The man charged with murder after his 6-year-old daughter was stabbed to death along the Blue Ridge Parkway will appear for a hearing in August, according to online court records.

Seth Willis Pickering was arrested in September 2016 after the slaying of 6-year-old Lila Pickering. According to federal documents, Pickering stabbed Lila in the heart in front of park rangers who approached him to investigate an illegal fire.

Investigators said Pickering took the child from her custodian's house without permission and fled to the wooded area near mile marker 393 on the parkway.

Pickering is charged with first-degree murder, a crime that carries a possible sentence of life in prison or the death penalty.

Attorneys for Pickering filed a motion of continuance in May which was granted.

After the continuance, a hearing for the federal case against Pickering is set for Aug. 7 at 9:30 am.
