BURLINGTON, Vt. (WPTZ/CNN) — A mother dying of breast cancer got her wish to see her daughter graduate from school when officials worked to bring the ceremony to her hospital room.

Samantha Parrotte graduated from Champlain Valley Technical Center Tuesday night, but it was the second time she wore her cap and gown.

Ten months ago, Samantha’s mom, Patricia, got sick. She was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and a rare autoimmune disease.

“She looked in the mirror and on her chest there was a little bit of red. But of course I thought, it is just a little rash. Maybe an allergic reaction. But then it just progressed. My mom sometimes wouldn't be home a week at a time, and it was really hard. Trying to go to school (and) balance that out,” Samantha said.

Her father, Todd, noticed Samantha struggling. He gave her an option to take a break from school. Samantha refused.

“She stepped up to the plate. She busted her butt, and she excelled to make her mother and myself very proud,” Todd said.

Her mom's conditioned worsened and she wouldn't be able to make it the graduation ceremony.

“I know that it was my wife's wish to see to see her graduate,” Todd said.

So, Champlain Valley Technical Center and Saranac schools worked together to bring a special ceremony to her mom's hospital in Vermont.

“I went in there and like all of a sudden my mom was back, you know, not having the cancer effecting her,” Samantha said.

Todd added, “We got to see it together. It was special."

Two days later, Patricia passed away.

“I know that she is still with me, you know, and she would want me to go to my ceremonies with my class,” Samantha said.

Samantha wore the same gown she did that day in the hospital, and proudly accepted her diploma for CV Tech's allied health program.

But she got something more. Samantha is this year's winner of the student excellence award for her program. She didn't see it coming. It was a complete shock to Parrotte and her family.

“I couldn't be more proud of her. I know my wife is very proud also,” Todd said.

Two graduations for one young woman. Samantha has the gift of knowing her mom saw it all. A celebrated student, who learned the most valuable lesson. Family comes first.
