Upstate law enforcement, hazmat respond after unknown substance found in Toccoa, GA

TOCCOA, GA (FOX Carolina) -

Oconee County Sheriff's Office responded to a request for support from the Toccoa, GA Police and Fire Departments after an unknown powder was detected at a municipal building in their area.

Deputies said officials from Toccoa, GA Police and Fire Departments as well as hazmat crews from Oconee and Anderson Counties responded to provide technical support in identifying and safely handling the material.

Responding team members were able to conduct a detailed public safety assessment, obtain a sample of the material and process that sample for initial identification.

The substance was deemed safe and turned over to the FBI and GBI.

Officials from the Toccoa Police Department, Toccoa Fire Department, GBI and the FBI all worked together as lead agencies throughout the incident.
