OLD FORT, NC (FOX Carolina) -

A man has died after falling from the top of Catawba Falls in the Pisgah National Forest on Saturday.

According to emergency officials, when investigators arrived on scene they located a male victim who was suffering from life-threatening injuries. The man fell about 70 feet from the top of Catawba Falls.

Crews spent hours trying to get to the man, who had to be airlifted to Mission Hospital in Asheville.

Authorities confirmed Sunday that the man that had to be rescued had died of his injuries.

The sheriff's office confirmed on Monday that the victim was 22-year-old Charles Adam Muzic of Nebo.

They said he went hiking with his girlfriend and another friend when him and his girlfriend took a route to the top of the falls.

Deputies say Muzic was sitting on a rock near the top of the falls when the girlfriend turned her back to do something. She then heard a noise and Muzic was no longer sitting on the rock, she told deputies.

She told investigators she hiked down and found him at the bottom of the falls and called 911.
